For any healthy skin routine, a clean face is the foundation. However, the act alone is not enough. You need to know how to wash your face correctly. If you aren’t completing this process the right way, you could actually be doing more harm than good. In order to create a healthy glow on your face, make sure you know the proper way to go about face washing.
Skip Alcohol Containing Cleansers
Ensure you’re using a non-abrasive cleanser to wash your face by avoiding those products that contain alcohol. In one study, a mixture made up of 3% alcohol was applied to skin cells in a lab. After only two days of observation, the alcohol had contributed to a 26% cell death within the skin cells.
What makes this study even more frightening is that alcohol-based skin care products can contain more than 60% alcohol, having the potential to cause cell death on a substantial level. Damaging your skin cells is not the way to healthy skin.
Use Lukewarm Water
There is a fairly widespread belief that you should wash your face with hot water to open your pores and then rinse with cold water to close them. This is inaccurate information. You should instead be washing and rinsing your face with lukewarm water. The problem with the hot and cold water is that it shocks the skin.
Shocking the skin with these extreme fluctuations will only lead to dryness and irritation. Additionally, since hot water causes capillaries to widen, this can even lead to ruptured blood vessels on your face. Keep the temperature constant and avoid shock to your face with lukewarm water.
Although the end goal is to get your face as clean as possible, avoid scrubbing your face harshly. It’s your face, not a dirty pot or pan, so you need to be gentle. When you scrub your face, you irritate the skin. If you have acne concerns, scrubbing can actually rupture any bumps on your face, which can cause a blemish to appear on the skin.
Scrubbing the skin also causes microscopic tears within the skin layers, which can introduce bacteria and other toxins. Lastly, scrubbing forcefully stretches the skin which can cause premature aging. Be gentle and remember to always move your hands in an upward circular pattern starting from the base of your face and working your way up.
In addition to washing your face correctly, a dermatologist can also help you address any concerns you have to ensure you get the healthy glow you’ve always wanted.
