How To Store Your Cashmere Pieces Properly

22 May

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to store away your winter gear, including your cashmere pieces. Given the high-quality and gorgeousness of this fabric, wearing your pieces again is the ultimate goal. How well you store your cashmere pieces will determine whether or not they will be wear-ready when the temperatures start to drop again. Here are some tips to help you.

Acid-Free Tissue Paper

Purchase some acid-free tissue paper to wrap around your cashmere garments. It’s never a good idea to simply toss your garments in a box without this type of paper. Instead, wrap each garment in its own sheet of acid-free paper.

Moisture is a serious problem when it comes to cashmere as it can cause a chemical reaction within the fabric that may lead to a change in color or deterioration. The acid-free tissue paper ensures the garments stay dry so that you can avoid these issues. If you’re storing the garments in a high humidity area, the use of this tissue paper is critical.

Laundry

Make certain you are laundering your cashmere garments before you place them in storage. This is important even if you don’t see any visible stains. This is important because both stains and every day elements like smoke can actually damage the cashmere while it’s stored away.

The problem is that these substances may oxidize and become a permanent part of the fabric. Which means you won’t be able to get rid of them no matter your effort. Laundering the pieces before you store them away will help prevent this.

Climate Control

When you get ready to put away your winter clothes, make sure you aren’t putting your box of cashmere garments in the garage, attic or another non-climate controlled space. In addition to the previously mentioned moisture concerns, moisture is also attractive to varmints that like to feed on fabrics like cashmere as they thrive in warm and humid environments.

Storing your garments in this manner is basically an open invitation for them to feast. It’s best to tuck these garments in the back of the closet or even under your bed, just make sure it’s a climate controlled space.

Whether you have a cashmere wrap, sweater or scarf, the more effort you put into properly storing away your garments, the more wear you will get out of them. Make sure you are properly taking care of your pieces when storing them away. Click for more information on cashmere.
